water changes threw protein skimmer
« on: April 21, 2009, 02:36:00 PM »
Giving it a shot. I adjusted skimmer to run wetter, which I now get about a full cup of dark tea colored skimmate a day. I replenish the exact amount of saltwater as is in the cup every time.
Why, I dont quite know, but it makes sense in a way my tired brain doesnt want to talk about right now. :?  What do you guys and gals think? What are benefits? What are the cautions?

There are many people that run daily waterchanges using their skimmer,,, there was a discussion on Reef central about it...

any benefit to this?  Seems like just extra work......
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day...Teach a man to fish....Keep him the hell away from my tank....

well first & fore most when You take water out of the system You need to replace it sooner or later that being said  the benefit of small changes is less risk of shocking the system" usually controlled through the speed make up & top off water is added"
some how I'm thinking the possible benefit is muted by the fact it is un likely you can avoid regular water changes
by doing this  and it appears to me the risks  out weigh
any benefit  --IE over filling your skimmer cup

that's MHO

Many many years ago when i first started reefing there was a "reef god" so to say,it was Albert Thiel he did a continous water change on his tank at if memory serves 1 drop every 30 seconds. So I would think your kinda doing the same thing and his systems were super sweet looking.

I already have enough of a challenge of not sleeping at night, worrying about my tank. I don't need the complexity of managing ongoing water changes to my list of worries. :)  I believe in the KISS(Keep It Simple Stupid) method from my days in the military.

Kevin,
I guess anytime you can avoid shocking your system its a good thing but I don't get how doing a regular water change with new salt water matched to your existing water temp and salinity would be less affective.

newbee: dont know where You got that highlighted in red but those arnt my words--  ::)

reread the part highlighted in green

I apologise in advance if My written words were difficult to understand add " that are "to the purple highlighted area above  for additional clarification

on a last note I did fail to mention what is probably the biggest benefit of a skimmer change method & that would be the addition of trace on a daily basis& just to be clear it is my opinion it is not beneficial enough to out weigh the risk of over filling your skimmer cup.and again
it dosent do enough to replace water changes
for those of You who are just starting out  Ill be starting
a thread about matching Your water parameters with your make up water & water changes

Sorry birddogs,

some how my response, which is what you see in read, was mixed into your quote. Not sure how I did that when I posted; sorry for the confusion.  Please you have nothing to apologize for, I appreciate your insight on the hobby...I am learning a lot and have a lot of great questions to ask.
